CHC Ireland is challenging the Irish Department of Transport’s decision to award the next Irish Coast Guard search-and-rescue (SAR) contract to Bristow’s Irish subsidiary.
CHC, the existing provider of SAR services on behalf of the Irish Coast Guard, said it had submitted a High Court challenge “in relation to the validity of the tender process” for the new 10-year contract.
That contract, estimated to be worth €670 million (US$715 million), was awarded to Bristow in May 2023. It called for day- and night-time operation of four helicopter bases, as well as the provision of a fixed-wing service for five years.
“CHC is concerned there are flaws in the conduct of the competition and has initiated proceedings to challenge the outcome of the process,” the company said in a statement. “In view of the strict time limits in Irish law for taking steps to protect these rights, there was no alternative but to initiate proceedings at this time.”
Rob Tatten, CHC director of operations and accountable manager, Ireland, said: “We firmly believe the tender we submitted represents the best outcome for the Irish Coast Guard, the staff who provide the service, and the people who rely on it.”
