Oakland County Sheriff’s Aviation Unit, based in Pontiac, Michigan, has recently purchased the Gyrocam IR for installation on their Astar 350 helicopter. The collaboration between Gyrocam Systems and Oakland County Sheriff’s Office will provide an invaluable tool that will benefit Oakland County residents, other divisions of the agency and not to mention homeland security efforts.
Aerial surveillance is extremely important to Oakland County’s law enforcement activities and has proven to be essential in numerous emergency situations. This agency has actively been cutting down on various criminal activities such as auto theft. The Gyrocam IR has been a valuable aid in providing crucial support to ground crew who attempt to deter suspects from fleeing. This type of aerial surveillance has not only helped decrease crime but is also keeping officers on the ground safe.
The Gyrocam IR combines thermal imaging with a high resolution color camera in a single, lightweight gimbal. The 800-line, 3-chip color camera provides clear, crisp images, recording every detail in all weather conditions. The integrated 3 to 5 micron infrared sensor can capture differences in heat signatures in either traditional black and white, or as color enhanced images. The Gyrocam IR provides versatility by allowing the operator to view images from both the thermal imager and color camera.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Aviation unit started on June 5, 2001. The Aviation Unit is available to every Oakland County police department 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The helicopters also assist the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Marine Division and Dive Rescue Team with search and rescue operations, as well as assisting the Special Response Team (SRT) with tactical operations.
