Excellent article with 100% credibility. I am a retired Marine Corps senior aviator who commanded HMH-465’s sister squadron, HMH-466 (the Wolfpack). A fellow Marine Corps LtCol and close friend, commanded HMH-465. Our squadrons were competitive yet very close in conducting safe, combat-ready enhancing operations including partnered air to air refueling with VMGR-352, commanded by one of our mutual friends. And yes, we conducted refueling missions together once off Dana Point, CA. My squadron operated for at least two years with three detachments deployed (one in Okinawa and shared with HMH-465, one assigned to a CH-46 squadron training to deploy from Marine Corps Air Station Tustin, CA and one under our squadron’s internal training program preparing to join another CH-46 squadron for a future deployment afloat. A CH-53E squadron is manned and equipped for a “main” 8 helicopter base unit and two detachments (four helos each). A squadron that has to operationally exceed that design requires exceptionally detailed planning and incurs higher risk of mishaps for a myriad of reasons. HMH squadron success over the years is a testament to the value of training programs such as the Weapons and Tactics Instructor (WTI) and ability to conduct as much joint service exercises as time and assets allow. This article heralds the pilots, crews and maintainers of the valuable CH-53 asset.

The Marine CH-46E helicopter fleet was in exceptionally good condition when it was retired – and the logistic and supply chain trail is still largely in place with tremendous stocks of spares in preservation/storage. These helicopters are simple and the aircraft lends itself to transformation – as the State Department Aviation Division discovered when the CH-46E was chosen for their use. I suspect that this will be a highly successful program and that the initially quoted market potential of 90 aircraft is low by a factor of 2-3X.
It is surprising that a similar program for the UH-60A has not surfaced – likely because of the lack of preceding Standard Category certificate paperwork that gives the BV-107 an advantage.

As a professional but so called high risk fixed wing pilot I know my limits and when I got into vertical it showed me quick that this stuff needs a lot of training, and I am not talking of Autos on wide open fields! I don’t know how many hours I flew with Simon and I spent quite some money but it is every Dollar worth it ! Simon is great guy and his instructor skills are amazing!

Interesting that virtually all designs are for eVTOL ‘aircraft’ only and employ outboard distributed propulsion (mostly overhead airscrew propulsors). Not a single road-legal and viable ‘flying car’ is regularly in the news – unlike Lilium, for instance.

I think there is nothing new to it. The above mentioned ‘old’ technique was used for french helicopter like the Alouette and for the TH 55 with fully articulated rotor system. The US army as well as the German army used to apply the socalled ‘modified flare’ since tje late 70th.
