Airbus’s Racer high-speed helicopter demonstrator, developed in the frame of the European Research Clean Sky 2 project, has reached its fast cruise speed target of 407 km/h (220 kts).

On June 21, less than two months after its first flight, the Racer demonstrator exceeded its level speed objective of 407 km/h (220 kts) by reaching 420 km/h (227 kts) in its initial configuration.

In just seven flights and about nine hours of flight testing, almost all of the flight envelope has been opened.

“This achievement in such a short space of time is really a testimony to the hard work of our 40 partners in 13 European countries to bring all of this innovation to flight. On top of its performance, the aircraft’s aerodynamic behavior and stability are promising. We are all looking forward to the next phase of flight testing, especially the eco-mode which will enable us to shut down one engine in forward flight, thus reducing fuel consumption, and lowering the CO2 emissions,” said Bruno Even, CEO of Airbus Helicopters.

The flight test crew consisted of Hervé Jammayrac, Chief Flight Test Pilot, Dominique Fournier, Flight Test Engineer, and Christophe Skorlic, Test Flight Engineer. The next phase of flight testing will focus on single engine operations and finalize the flight envelope.

Optimized for a cruise speed of more than 400 km/h, the Racer demonstrator aims to achieve the best trade-off between speed, cost-efficiency, and mission performance.

The Racer also targets a fuel consumption reduction of around 20 percent, compared to current generation helicopters in the same maximum take-off weight category, thanks to aerodynamic optimisation and an innovative eco-mode propulsion system.

Developed with Safran Helicopter Engines, the hybrid-electrical eco-mode system allows one of the two Aneto-1X engines to be paused while in cruise flight, thus contributing to cutting CO2 emissions.

The Racer also aims to demonstrate how its particular architecture can contribute to lowering its operational acoustic footprint.

The Saudi Arabian General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) and Lilium N.V., an electric aircraft manufacturer and pioneer in regional air mobility (RAM), signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) at the Farnborough International Airshow to develop and implement the required regulations for eVTOL operations in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia beginning in 2026.

The partnership will start by setting up a joint Working Group preparing the regulations in Saudi Arabia for the introduction of regional electric air mobility.

Dedicated sub-working groups for infrastructure, air operations, airworthiness, and airspace integration, led by GACA and strongly supported by Lilium, are to jointly discuss, accelerate, develop, and implement the necessary regulatory and procedural framework.

Saudi Arabia has recognized the enormous growth potential of eVTOL and intends to take a decisive step towards the introduction of the new modes of transport into existing traffic and airspace structures by 2026 with the published Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) Roadmap.

Lilium has already been in close contact with GACA in recent years and has supported the development of the regulatory framework and procedures needed to safely operate eVTOL in Saudia Arabia.

Lilium has a wide knowledge of the regulatory development, processes, and relevant legislation based on the participation in different ICAO Working Groups (such as ICAO AAM SG and ICAO VFIWG), EASA Working Groups (such as RMT.230 including the active and driving participation and contribution to EASA PTS-VPT-DSN and EASA Part-IAM), EUROCAE Working Groups, discussions with the FAA and ANAC, and different similar national approaches in Europe.

Given this background, Lilium will support and collaborate with GACA in the joint dedicated Working Group for Saudi Arabia.

The Working Group will be the expert group that identifies, addresses, and defines the action items which will be worked on for the implementation of IAM in Saudi Arabia in terms of regulation, legislation and procedures.

Abdulaziz Al-Duailej, president of GACA, said: “This agreement reflects GACA’s commitment to advancing innovative and sustainable air mobility solutions for Saudi Arabia, in support of Vision 2030. By working with global advanced air mobility companies, we aim to establish a robust regulatory framework that ensures the safe and efficient operation of eVTOL aircraft.”

Lilium CEO Klaus Roewe highlights: “We are very thankful that GACA has chosen Lilium to develop and implement the regulatory framework for eVTOL in Saudi Arabia. It acknowledges Lilium’s knowhow in aviation regulation. Our goal is to jointly advance regulatory and practical steps for suitable framework conditions for electric aviation and our customers in Saudi Arabia. Today’s MoU delivers on one of the main ingredients required to successfully launch eVTOL operations—a definitive path to all relevant regulatory cornerstones.”

Almost three-quarters (71 percent) of the U.K. are eager to see cleaner forms of air travel, according to a representative survey unveiled by Lilium N.V., an electric aircraft manufacturer and pioneer in regional air mobility (RAM).

Ahead of the Farnborough Air Show, Lilium presented brand new research about the United Kingdom’s attitudes to the present and future of aviation and transportation, including its impact on congestion, pollution, and disruption such as noise levels.

The research also includes findings into the future of air travel in the country: from electric planes to electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft such as the Lilium Jet. Sixty percent-plus of respondents stated they were concerned by aviation’s impact on environmental noise, traffic/congestion near large airports, and damage to rural environments.

Environment and Community

Notably, respondents from Wales and the West Midlands noted concern for damage to rural environments at 77 percent and 80 percent respectively, higher than the national average.

In addition, environmental noise and traffic congestion were both concerning to more than seven in ten of London respondents, which plays host to four of the five busiest airports in the country. Eighty percent of respondents from the capital cited concerns for air travel’s impact on pollution.

Of those surveyed, 74 percent cited concern for aviation’s impact on pollution and climate change. Overall, 71 percent of respondents agreed that it’s about time there was a sustainable mode of air travel.

Transport preferences

Respondents were also surveyed on their preferences for selecting modes of transport. The three most commonly cited factors informing their decision were cost, convenience of access, and comfort.

Preference toward cost was more important amongst respondents aged 18-34, whilst convenience was notably higher amongst respondents aged 35+ than younger groups.

Respondents were also asked which modes of transport they would most likely utilise for travelling regional distances (100 miles/160 kilometers)— one in two would travel via car, whilst 34 percent would travel via train. For respondents aged 18-34, the train was the most popular option (42 per cent), whilst the car was the most popular option for travellers aged 35-54 (53 per cent) and 55-plus (61 per cent).

Of those surveyed as part of this research, 59 per cent expressed interest in using eVTOL aircraft as a mode of transport if it was available to them. Furthermore, 82 per cent of respondents who have an understanding of eVTOL aircraft would use one if available to them.

Sebastien Borel, Chief Commercial Officer, Lilium, said: “This survey shows clearly that people in the UK are ready to fly eVTOL aircraft such as the Lilium Jet. People are looking for a transformed approach to mobility minimizing noise and air pollution, one that’s more comfortable and convenient to access. We see the Lilium Jet as the clear solution to this challenge: With zero operating emissions, and a low noise profile, our Jet is a perfect fit with people’s expectations of the decarbonization of air travel. I also believe that once our aircraft is in operations commercially, the numbers we have seen in this survey will increase.”

The research surveyed 1,000 nationally representative adults across England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales and was conducted between July 10 and 12, 2024 by insight agency Opinium.

]]>
At the 2024 Farnborough International Airshow, Urban-Air Port (UAP) releases their industry-leading next-generation vertiport (AirOne), which brings together UAP’s advanced robotic systems and LG Electronics’ AI-powered technologies.

In March 2024, UAP and LG announced a strategic collaboration to power up a new generation of vertiports – an alliance that signalled the global electronics giant’s move into the advanced mobility field. Together, they now present their fully digitally integrated next-generation vertiport. It is the world’s most advanced solution – the first to incorporate AI-enabled systems – and merges cutting-edge technology with customer-centric designs to define the future of air travel.

LG and UAP are developing modular stations that integrate an ecosystem of advanced digital solutions, including adaptive LED signage and transparent OLED displays, interactive kiosks and comprehensive digital management and control systems.

From optimised processes to immersive art installations and seamless digital interfaces, the UAP & LG modular system brings a smarter, more engaging and personalised travel experience. The design includes features such as biometric check-in, interactive lounges, EV-charging hubs and retail stands with dynamic LED walls that change content based on occupancy, improving economic and spatial efficiency.

Commercially viable – the world’s most advanced vertiport infrastructure stack.

Recognising that market viability is the cornerstone of any transport infrastructure, AirOne is commercially ready. Its fully integrated architecture and modular system are designed to support early entry into service capacities, while also future-proofing demand for more VTOLs and increased throughput as the industry matures. It is viable, affordable, scalable and the most efficient way to launch an electric and/or hybrid VTOL service.

The Urban-Air Port Vertical Airfield robotics system provides the highest degree of operational efficiency and capacity, providing operators with a highly sophisticated infrastructure stack within an 80% smaller footprint, at 50% less cost to install and profitable operations with pay-back times vastly faster than any competing system. With in-built LG technologies, operators are easily able to realise non-aeronautical revenues on the Urban-Air Port’s very small footprint.

“Our unique technology, anchored by our robotic Vertical Airfield and stacked hangar system, enables us to design, build and operate our vertiports at a much lower capex than a traditional ground-based, space-hungry horizontal vertiport. Our Vertical Airfield technology allows us to secure sites up to 80% smaller, dramatically cutting costs, but also enhancing the passenger throughput, experience and safety.

With built-in systems, we can reduce the effects of eVTOL downwash and outwash. This means we can install our vertiports across our networks in urban locations safely. With LG, we are proud to lead the Advanced Air Mobility infrastructure sector into the AI and robotics era. We have always led the field in innovation – this is no different,” said Andrea Wu, CEO of Urban-Air Port.

The post Electra’s hybrid eSTOL aircraft aces first grass field test flights appeared first on Vertical Mag.

]]>
Electra.aero, Inc. (Electra) a next-gen aerospace company committed to decarbonizing aviation and opening new air transportation markets, has successfully completed off-runway test flights of its EL-2 Goldfinch hybrid-electric short takeoff and landing (eSTOL) technology demonstrator aircraft from a grass field near Electra’s facility in Manassas, Virginia.

The flights demonstrate the eSTOL aircraft’s effectiveness for operating from austere fields smaller than 300 ft that are minimally prepared. The aircraft flew a series of takeoffs and landings from a grass area and demonstrated the maximum performance climb-out of 32 degrees that would be used in many military missions. It also required no charging infrastructure as the batteries are charged in-flight by the hybrid propulsion system.

The dual-use technology is ideally suited to serve as a small highly fuel-efficient and cost-effective airlifter that supports Agile Combat Employment and expeditionary missions while reducing the operational energy footprint.
Small, affordable, runway-independent eSTOL aircraft could also alleviate demand on larger, few-in-number, high performance fixed wing and rotorcraft platforms in a contested logistics environment.

“The Electra eSTOL technologies increase the number of available landing sites by orders of magnitude relative to traditional fixed wing aircraft while providing for higher cruise speeds, lower costs, and lower noise than vertical lift solutions. These first flights from a field demonstrate the beginnings of this strong capability that we will continue to develop,” said JP Stewart, Electra’s vice president and general manager.

In addition to the grass operations, the test campaign included acoustic data collection to validate the low-acoustic capabilities of the eSTOL technologies. The aircraft achieved quiet operations of under 55 decibels at 500 feet overflight, a sound level comparable to human conversation.
At typical cruise altitudes, the aircraft will be inaudible over background noise. Later flights will progress to even rougher and more confined areas as the test program continues.

Electra is developing the production aircraft which will carry 9 passengers or 2,500 pounds of cargo up to 500 miles while still providing the STOL, austere operations, and low-noise capabilities. Aircraft certification and entry into commercial service under FAA Part 23 regulations is targeted for 2028.

The post Vertical Aerospace unveils most advanced and powerful full-scale VX4 prototype appeared first on Vertical Mag.

]]>
Vertical Aerospace, a global aerospace and technology company that is pioneering zero emissions aviation, unveiled its next generation full-scale VX4 prototype, the only electric take-off and landing vehicle (eVTOL) designed, built and assembled in the U.K.

This next-generation VX4 is more powerful than the previous full-scale prototype, with a 20 percent increase in the power to weight ratio, enabling the aircraft to reach speeds of up to 150mph – the certification aircraft’s intended cruise speed.

The aircraft has been designed and built alongside global aerospace partners, including GKN Aerospace, Honeywell, Hanwha, Molicel, Leonardo and Syensqo. It features Vertical’s next generation propellers and new proprietary battery technology, designed and manufactured at its multi-million pound state-of-the-art Vertical Energy Centre near Bristol, the U.K.’s most advanced aerospace battery facility.

The new VX4 prototype has successfully completed systems and aircraft testing and commissioning.

Vertical is now working closely with the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) as it rigorously evaluates the engineering, design, test data and aircraft ahead of issuing a Permit to Fly, effectively conducting a “mini certification” programme. Vertical will then begin a robust flight test programme at the Vertical Flight Test Centre, with a focus on achieving piloted flight.

Vertical is currently developing an identical full-scale prototype which will accelerate the VX4’s flight test programme and demonstration capability. The company will take flight test learnings from both prototypes into the design and development of the certified VX4 model.

Key new features of the latest full-scale VX4 prototype:

• Aerospace partner technology and certification expertise – 60 percent of the technology and components included on the latest aircraft are from world leading aerospace partners, up from 10 percent on the previous prototype. This makes it Vertical’s most advanced prototype yet and a step closer to the aircraft that the company will take through to certification.

• First use of battery designed and built for aviation – This battery and powertrain system, developed at the Vertical Energy Centre, is the most powerful and lightest yet, has rapid charge time and multiple backup power sources. The VX4’s batteries are designed to meet the performance, safety, operational and commercial requirements of eVTOL and it is the first time its own proprietary batteries have been used on a full-scale prototype. The electronics, software and design of the battery have all been developed in house and the new aircraft includes new, more powerful Electronic Propulsion Units.

• Next generation propellers – Vertical’s new proprietary propellers designed specifically for eVTOLs are optimized for low noise and made of carbon fibre composite using a single-shot cure process to maximize integrity. The aerodynamic shape has been specifically designed to maximize performance across both hover and cruise by deconflicting the requirements of each phase of flight.

Stuart Simpson, chief executive officer, Vertical, commented:

“Our goal is to build the safest and most advanced aircraft in this new category of transport. With the new full-scale VX4 prototype, which has been built by combining our own world-leading technology with that from leading aerospace partners, we are well on the way to achieving that goal.

“This is a critical step on our road to certification and commercialisation and, while there is more to do, the support of our partners and our $6 billion order book shows the trust and confidence the industry has in our outstanding product. We are excited to start our robust, test flight programme at our Flight Test Centre as we continue our focus on achieving piloted flight.”

Dave Stepanek, executive vice president, chief transformation officer, Bristow Group: “As one of the world’s largest helicopter operators, we’re excited to be collaborating with Vertical as they work to bring the VX4 to market. We are delighted to see the progress being made with this latest prototype.”

David Shilliday, vice president and general manager, unmanned aerial systems / urban air mobility,

Honeywell Aerospace Technologies: “The VX4 is testament to what can be achieved when industry leaders join forces to pioneer the future of air mobility. This electric aircraft benefits from the Honeywell Anthem flight deck and software, as well as a state-of-the-art fly-by-wire system. This enables the pilot or autopilot to manoeuvre the aircraft safely and simply, ensuring a smooth journey.”

Teledyne FLIR, part of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated, announced the next-generation embedded software for the ITAR-free Boson+ thermal camera module, delivering high performing uncooled thermal imaging technology for defensefirefighting, automotive, security, and surveillance applications.

Featuring industry-leading thermal sensitivity of ≤20 mK, Boson+ has been upgraded to provide even sharper thermal imagery and improved spatial filtering.

Continuously improved thermal performance and proven market-leading reliability make Boson+ the low-risk integration choice for unmanned platforms, security applications, handhelds, wearables, and thermal sights.

“Boson+ shares the industry-leading size, weight, and power (SWaP) of the widely deployed and real-world-proven Boson thermal camera module, simplifying integration and shortening time to market for our customers,” said Dan Walker, vice president, product management, OEM cores, Teledyne FLIR.

“With software updates including new color palettes, low gain mode, and an updated GUI, the AI-ready Boson+ continues to be the go-to thermal module for defense, industrial, and commercial integrators.”

Boson+ interfaces seamlessly with the new Teledyne FLIR AVP, an advanced video processor that powers Prism™ AI and computational imaging at the edge. The AVP, built on the latest Qualcomm QCS8550, efficiently runs Teledyne FLIR Prism AI software providing detection, classification, and target tracking.

To improve data fidelity and enhance decision support, it also operates Prism ISP algorithms including super resolution, image fusion, atmospheric turbulence removal, electronic stabilization, local-contrast enhancement, and noise reduction.

Made in the USA, the 12-micron pixel pitch Boson+ is available in both 320 x 256 and 640 x 512 resolutions.

The noise equivalent differential temperature (NEDT) of 20 mK or less offers significantly enhanced detection, recognition, and identification (DRI) performance. Improved video latency enhances tracking, seeker performance, and decision support.

Truly designed for integrators, the Boson+ is available with a variety of lens options, comprehensive product documentation, an easy-to-use SDK, and a user-friendly GUI.

Customers have access to the U.S.-based Teledyne FLIR Technical Services team to reduce development risk and cost. Boson+ is dual use (non-ITAR) and is classified under US Department of Commerce jurisdiction as EAR 6A003.b.4.a.
